Potatoes, the Yen, and a Two-Hour Dinner
Trump was reported to have asked Japan, which already grows about 70% of the potatoes it eats, to open its market to raw American potatoes. Separately, the New York Times reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spent more than two hours over dinner in May telling Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki what was wrong with the Takaichi government's economic policy. Japanese posters spent less time on the demands themselves than on how much Tokyo appears willing to hand over.
