Tens of Thousands Cross Into Ceuta, and Most Are Back in Morocco by Nightfall

Spain's interior ministry put the number who crossed from Morocco into the enclave of Ceuta at 50,000, while the city's own president estimated 60,000, against a resident population of about 84,000. The military and police were deployed. By the end of 31 July the interior ministry said more than 48,000 had already returned to Morocco. In Japanese threads the argument was never really about Spain: it was about a court ruling on people who arrive by swimming, and about what protects Japan.

Thousands of people crossed by sea into Ceuta, the Spanish enclave of about 84,000 residents on the North African coast, on 31 July. At least 18 died and the Spanish military was deployed. Japanese threads spent almost no time on Spain itself: the argument was about a court ruling that people who swim across cannot be removed, and about whether Japan is heading the same way.
