Brazil's 'Slant-Eye' Taunt and NTV's Broadcast Blunder
Japan's 2-1 defeat to Brazil at the World Cup was followed by Brazilian fans and influencers spreading a 'slant-eye' anti-Asian gesture. NTV's news program 'news zero' aired the footage from its on-site coverage unedited and said the discriminatory expression slipped past staff who 'didn't notice.' The result was a storm over the network's editorial checks and over Brazilian conduct — though some netizens shrugged it off as an overreaction, arguing the gesture 'doesn't even work on Japanese.'
