American Student Missing in Kyoto Found Dead in the Mountains
James 'Weston' Higginbotham, 20, an Auburn University student visiting Japan with his family, was found dead in the mountains outside Kyoto on June 6, days after parting from his family in the city on May 29. The cause of death is under investigation. Foreign reporting that he had argued with his mother over using AI, together with his vegan and environmentalist convictions, became the focus of Japanese discussion — alongside concern about the risks of lightly equipped solo hiking in Japan's mountains.
