Australian Tourist Sues Hakodate for ¥400M After Falling From Bridge
A 66-year-old Australian tourist slipped and fell about three meters from the Shichizai Bridge in Hakodate in 2025, suffering quadriplegia, and is now suing the city for roughly 400 million yen. He argues the railing, at about 56cm, fell short of the national 110cm standard. Most Japanese netizens called it blame-shifting, but a notable minority said the sub-standard railing gives the city a genuine case to answer.
