Dam Failures and a Chongqing Landslide Feed Distrust of China's Numbers
Reservoir and dam breaches in Guangxi were followed by a large mountainside collapse in Chongqing that toppled apartment blocks below the slope. State media and AP reported more than ten buildings buried and over 1,100 people evacuated, with the number of trapped residents still being confirmed. Japanese netizens focused less on the disasters themselves than on their conviction that the official casualty count would stay small.
