Trump Calls Off the Iran Strike, and Japan Files It Under Reruns
On 1 August, Trump posted that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had asked him to hold off because a framework for a deal had come together, and said he was calling off a large-scale strike on Iran. The stated conditions were the immediate and complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat, with Israel said to have agreed. CBS had reported on 31 July that the US and Israel were planning strikes on several Iranian energy facilities. Almost nobody in the Japanese threads took the announcement at face value.
