Japan's Men's Basketball Beats China for a First Final in 64 Years — and China's 'Big Win' Fake News

Japan's men's basketball team beat China 97-77 in the Asian Games semifinal to reach its first final in 64 years, then lost the final to South Korea for silver. A false score — '108-82, a big China win' — spread on some Chinese sites, well short of mainstream media, and drew mockery in Japan, where users said 'they'll even fabricate a sports result.' Alongside the celebration, many questioned whether a roster heavy with US-born and foreign-rooted players makes it 'Japan's' achievement, echoing a debate long heard around the ekiden.
